Israel-Palestine conflict update: What’s happening and what comes next

Everything you need to know about the latest in the Israel-Palestine conflict following Hamas's surprise invasion of Israel.

On the morning of 7th October 2023, Hamas launched ‘Operation Al Aqsa Flood’, a series of co-ordinated surprise attacks on Israel that coincided with the Jewish holiday Simchat Torah, and the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur war. Hundreds of people have been killed in the attacks, which saw Palestinian militant groups break out of the barricaded Gaza Strip, invading nearby Israeli settlements and military installations. Dozens of Israeli residents and soldiers have been taken hostage.

In response, Israel has launched a massive campaign of airstrikes over Gaza, which has also resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people, and formally declared war on Hamas.

The events mark a severe escalation in the Israel-Palestine conflict, returning one of the world’s longest running active conflicts to a state of open war.

In this report, we provide an overview of the events so far, what is currently happening at the time of writing, and what we can expect to see in Israel’s war with Hamas in the coming days and weeks.
