The specific threats made by IS towards players must be taken seriously but do not necessarily represent confirmation that the featured players will be targeted. IS have been known to make specific threats in order to foster fear and mistrust rather than as a precursor to an actual attack. Lastly, pre-emptive measures taken by the Russian security services have targeted multiple terror threats in the lead up to the tournament, meaning that numerous plots and networks are likely to have been disrupted already. The threat facing the tournament is significant, although Russian security forces preparations appear to have adapted to attempt to counter the elevated threat level.
