Post Incident Report: Roadworks on Don Mueang Airport – Thailand

Imagery Analysis: Roadworks on Don Mueang International Airport – Incident Date: 30 Oct 2017

The bridge to enter Don Mueang International Airport is to close until September 2018. The Department of Highways has initiated the works due to persistent traffic congestion on Vibhavadi Rangsit and areas around the airport. The road works will allow the outbound road to support three lanes of regular traffic.

The bridge is set to be demolished, and reconstructed with a new design prior to reopening next year. During the works, outbound Vibhavadi Rangsit Road will be closed from 10pm to 4am daily, with two detours being provided for motorists.

During the daytime, people heading into Don Mueang International Airport may choose three alternative routes. The assessed locations of these entry points are shown in the imagery above. Heavy congestion is expected throughout the duration of the renovation project. Advice from the Department of Highways has recommended passengers to be prepared to leave two to three hours earlier than they would normally to ensure flights are not missed (Bing Maps, 2017, McCabe and Harrington, 2017).

COMMENT. Ironically, these road works to address traffic congestion will cause further delays in getting into and out of Don Mueng Airport. Alternatively, Suvarnabhumi International Airport is to the South-East of Don Mueang International Airport and would appear to provide the same access to Bangkok. COMMENT ENDS.

ASSESSMENT

With the road works that are now occurring at Don Mueang International Airport, it is PROBABLE that entering and exiting Bangkok â and Thailand in general â will be easier through flights which operate from Suvarnabhumi Airport over the next 12 months.
